Hauer Environmental LLC specializes in ecosystem consulting, analytics, and training.
About our Team
Richard and Andrew have made careers working on environmental projects both with the University of Montana and as independent contractors. Richard has been involved in many papers and methods that inform today’s wetlands research. Ric’s long history as a wetlands researcher and Andrew’s as a project manager and data analyst have provided a vast network of contract professionals and academics who can provide independent and industry-leading assessment and training.
Dr. F. Richard Hauer
Partner, Professor Emeritus University of Montana
Dr. F. Richard Hauer, taught stream ecology for over 35 years and held the Stream Ecology endowed chair for 18 years. He is Founding Director of the University of Montana’s intercollegiate graduate program “Systems Ecology” (2008-2014) and Founding co-Director of the statewide, interuniversity research center “Montana Institute on Ecosystems” (2011-2015).
Dr. Hauer has served in developing environmental policy, implementation, and assessment of the US Federal Clean Water Act and advisor to the US Army Corps of Engineers and the US EPA. He served on the HGM-National Development Team (see Brinson, Hauer and others 1996) in the early 1990’s as wetland assessment was being first-conceived and was the lead author of 2 regional Guidebooks; the Northern Rocky Mountain Riverine (Hauer et al 2002a) and the Northern Rocky Mountain Depressional wetlands (Hauer et al. 2002b). Ric has taught two Prospect courses for the USACE Learning Center since the early 2000’s; General Stream Ecology (Course 192) and River/Wetland Floodplain Assessment (Course 426).
Dr. Hauer’s research encompassed the broad interdisciplinary field of Systems Ecology with a focus on stream biodiversity, stream responses to climate change, the relationships of bio-physical processes of gravel-bed river floodplains and wetlands, and the functional assessment of wetland ecosystems. He has published >100 research articles in international, peer-reviewed journals such as Science, Science Advances, BioScience, Freshwater Science and remains active in research and publishing.
Ric is past-President (2004-5) and Fellow (elected 2019) of the international scientific organization “Society for Freshwater Science” and a Distinguished Scholar (elected 2011) of the University of Montana. He is co-Editor and Author of the internationally acclaimed book Methods in Stream Ecology by Hauer and Lamberti (Elsevier), the most widely used book in the field of stream and river ecology worldwide, now in its 3rd edition.
Andrew Hauer
Partner, Data Analyst, Project Manager, Systems Engineer
Andrew Hauer, MSBA has been a contract professional at the University of Montana since 2010 and is now a Founding Partner of Hauer Environmental LLC. He has extensive experience as a project manager, communications director, data analyst, database manager, and IT specialist.
Andrew has a Bachelor of Science in Resource Conservation Management from the University of Montana’s W.A. Franke College of Forestry and Conservation and a Masters of Science in Business Analytics from UM’s College of Business. With an MSBA and a focus on Big Data analytics and technology, Andrew has a keen ability to leverage data and present it in digestible formats, visualizations, and models; as well as in programming languages such as Python, R, and SQL.
At UM from 2010 to 2024, Andrew worked on the leadership teams of multiple research and educational centers. During the most recent 5 years he has provided strategic planning, programmatic administration, and analytical leadership at two high visibility research groups: the National Science Foundation (NSF) Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) and the Numerical Terradynamic Simulations Group (NTSG). These research groups generate massive data for environmental analysis and conservation. Andrew’s IT and data analysis expertise has been essential to these successful academic and applied science programs.
At Hauer Environmental, Andrew is the developer and software engineer for all big-data analysis and functionality of Hauer Environmental web tools. His unique perspectives and knowledge working with large data sets coupled with his practical experience in stream, river, and wetland field sciences fosters innovative solutions to the real-world problems of environmental assessment.
